MCF Datasets
We are pleased to share that two Medicine Carbon Footprint (MCF) datasets are now available to download. We are delighted that they were downloaded over 1000 times in the first wee
The datasets provide standardised carbon footprint values for medicines and active pharmaceutical ingredients, generated using MCF Classifier, our peer-reviewed methodology for estimating the carbon emissions of small molecule medicines.
To learn more about MCF Classifier and how the values are calculated, please visit the MCF Classifier page.
The two datasets are complementary. Together, they support different types of analysis and decision-making across research, healthcare, industry, procurement, sustainability, and policy.
Medicine Carbon Footprint (MCF) Dataset - Products
This provides cradle-to-gate carbon footprint values for over 30,000 medicine products, including the active pharmaceutical ingredient, excipients, and primary packaging. Values are provided per MCF unit, such as one tablet, capsule, vial, ampoule, bottle, or spoonful, and include an MCF Rating from LOW to VERY HIGH.

Medicine Carbon Footprint (MCF) Dataset - Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients
This provides carbon footprint values for the manufacture and formulation of nearly 3000 active pharmaceutical ingredients. Values are expressed per kilogram of API and can be useful for ingredient-level assessments, life cycle assessments, and analyses where product-level data are not required.
Accessing the datasets
Both datasets are available through the SMP Repository as Excel or CSV files, together with supporting documentation including README files, data dictionaries, Methods and Scope document, and FAQs.
The datasets are licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0), allowing them to be shared and adapted with appropriate attribution.
